Woo Audio created one of the most dumbfoundingly amazing set of SET monoblocs ever to roam the earth. A pair of Woo 234s will SET you back $17,750.00 USD for the base model, and the price goes up from there depending upon what turtle-tickling upgrades you might fancy. But when the rubber meets the road, the 234s are a lifetime investment in AWESOME.
First – they are headphone amplifiers and, with a special conversion plug, adapt to become loudspeaker amplifiers. Using other conversion plugs that they supply, you’re also able to switch triodes between 300B, 2A3, and 45. As if THAT wasn’t enough, for the super-tweaky headphonista – you’re able to switch between plate or cathode outputs for high and low impedance headphones.
It is a rather specialized acquisition, though, especially when considering the kinds of speakers that could mate well with it. Given that the maximum output of the amplifiers through the loudspeaker terminals is a scant 8w (and goes down from there) – you’d better have your loudspeaker sensitivity worked out ahead of time. High sensitivity loudspeakers tend to be of the horn-loaded variety, on average – but if you’re in the market for a set of 234s, chances are you know this anyway.
